Abstract

This dissertation gives an overview of the economic development of Iran in the past five decades. The main focus is on the period after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. It is mainly about describing the principles of the economic politics: on one hand they are partially driven by ideological foundations of the leadership - On the other hand there are the externally given economic general data. The combination of both forces is explained here.

The result is a explanation of the modern economic history of Iran, where the specific economic problems of this country are shown, but also giving an informative case study for economic development politics in general. The outline of this book is structured by the several economic historical phases of modern Iran. In the first chapter “Monarchist Modernization from 1923-1979” the economic policy “Growth first –redistribute later”of the shah-era is analyzed. The result of this political strategy which is backed with increasing oil windfall profits are strong growth but also severe inequality in wealth distribution.

The post-revolution economic policy is the main focus of the whole book. The next four chapters are dedicated to this post-revolution era:

bullet

Ch: 2 Islamic Populism 1979-1989

bullet

Ch: 3 Economic liberalism 1989-1997: reconstruction strategy

bullet

Ch. 4: The reform actions for reconstruction

bullet

Ch. 5: Results of economic development

bullet

Ch. 6: Socio-Islamic Liberalism since 1997: Khatamis presidency

The whole dissertation is organized by the “spiraltheory”, developed by the author, which is discovering new interdependencies within each phase of the economic history of Iran in a all-over-spanning approach- based on liberalist versus populist policy.
