This dissertation gives an
overview of the economic development of Iran in the past five decades. The main
focus is on the period after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. It is mainly about
describing the principles of the economic politics: on one hand they are
partially driven by ideological foundations of the leadership - On the other
hand there are the externally given economic general data. The combination of
both forces is explained here.
The result is a explanation of
the modern economic history of Iran, where the specific economic problems of
this country are shown, but also giving an informative case study for economic
development politics in general. The outline of this book is structured by the
several economic historical phases of modern Iran. In the first chapter
“Monarchist Modernization from 1923-1979” the economic policy “Growth first –redistribute
later”of the shah-era is analyzed. The result of this political strategy which
is backed with increasing oil windfall profits are strong growth but also severe
inequality in wealth distribution.
The post-revolution economic
